CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Police are searching for a semi-truck suspected of hitting a man as he crossed a Chula Vista street Thursday afternoon and then fleeing the scene.
Chula Vista police received several calls at around 4:50 p.m. after witnesses reported seeing a man struck by a vehicle in the 600 block of H Street.
When officers arrived, they discovered that the 50-year-old man had been hit by a vehicle traveling westbound. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
H Street was closed for a few hours due to the investigation.
Surveillance video from a nearby business showed a semi-truck with a white cab passing by during the time of the crash. Police are now searching for that vehicle and its driver. The truck has the words "XTRA Freight" written on the side.
Police noted the pedestrian was not in the crosswalk when he was struck. However, some nearby residents say even when people cross the street illegally, vehicles still speed down the road.
One resident said the street is sometimes too dark to see anyone crossing the road.
"We need more lights here on the street so the cars can see us because when we're going to cross, we only have the yellow light," the resident said.
Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call the Chula Vista Police Department at 619-691-5151.
