It's that time of year again for thousands of South Bay kids: School is back in session this week for Chula Vista Elementary School District and Sweetwater Union High School District students.

The 2017-18 school year for Chula Vista Elementary School District students officially begins Wednesday morning, with Sweetwater Union High School District students starting the new school year on Thursday.

Both districts are under year-round schedules and had six full weeks of vacation since the previous school year ended in June.

Back To School Resources:

All schools in the Chula Vista Elementary School District -- the largest elementary-only district in California -- will be on a minimum day schedule on Wednesday.

A little more than 500 Chula Vista Elementary School District students will attend a brand-new school, as the $51 million Saburo Muraoka Elementary School opens Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Sweetwater Union High School District officials said the district has no immediate plans to build a new middle or high school. A spokesperson told 10News property is set aside for a middle school in near the Otay Ranch Town Center, but design and construction would take at least four years if it started this year.
