LA MESA, Calif. - A toddler found wandering near a La Mesa park by herself Monday morning escaped a home daycare, La Mesa Police said.
Detectives are still working to find out how the three-year-old wandered away. Her mother picked her up from La Mesa Police station around 11:00 a.m.
The mother dropped her daughter off at the private daycare at 5:30 a.m. Shortly before 6:00 a.m., police received a call about a little girl spotted walking alone at Kathy Street and Broadmoor Drive, near Harry Griffen Park.
The woman who runs the daycare left the home assuming her two adult children were watching the toddler but they were actually asleep, police said.
The girl walked out an unlocked door.
Officers responded and safely took the three-year-old girl into their custody. They worked for hours to find the child's family.
The investigation is ongoing but police said child endangerment charges against the daycare owner are a possibility.
