CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- Through the years, 10News reporter Joe Little has reported on many upcoming development projects in Chula Vista. But today he's offering up an update on four that are nearly competed.

In addition to having cool new schools and hotels, residents can benefit through job creation.

25-year wait for new hotel

During Chula Vista mayor Mary Casillas Salas' third state of the city address, she mentioned the beginning of construction on two hotels in eastern Chula Vista -- including a Residence Inn by Marriott, which has finally begun to post job openings.

The hotel will open this August and created 1,000 construction jobs with 40 full-time jobs to come. Here's a link to Residence Inn jobs.

Chula Vista hasn't had a new hotel in 25 years, according to a San Diego Union-Tribune report

New school opens this summer

The Chula Vista Elementary School District also expects to open its new $48 million two-story elementary school in July and created 805 construction jobs

Saburo Muraoka Elementary located near Otay Ranch High will be the first school in San Diego county named for a Japanese American.

The late Muraoka was a Chula Vista farmer who was forced into an internment camp in Texas during World War II. He returned to Chula Vista after the war, rebuilt his life and became a pillar of the community.

Eleven new schools are projected to open in Chula Vista over the next 15-20 years.

Southwestern College lot transformation

Voters who approved Proposition R in 2008 will also continue to see progress made on Southwestern College's former dirt corner lot, which should be transformed into a health and wellness center by January 2018.

The lot, located on the corner of H Street and Otay Lakes Road, had been untouched for 53 years. It's transformation along with other expansion projects created 626 construction jobs.

Residents and students alike will enjoy a new performing arts center to be built once the health and wellness center is completed.

Millenia Development nears completion

The largest development on Chula Vista’s east side is easily the Millenia development just south of the Otay Ranch Town Center.

Millenia is being built in phases. It already has hundreds of homes.

Once it’s completed, it will include roughly 3,000 homes and more than 3 million square feet of commercial space with thousands of new jobs.
