Possible abduction attempt report in Carlsbad

School officials warned Carlsbad-area families Friday about a possible child-abduction attempt that occurred this week in the area.

The potential victim was walking near La Costa Heights Elementary School on Levante Street on Thursday afternoon when a white van with tinted windows pulled up near him and the driver, a man with a "buzz cut" hairstyle, asked the boy if he needed a ride, according to a statement from the office of Tim Baird, superintendent of the Encinitas Union School District.

The fourth-grader said "no" and ran, according to Baird's message to parents.

School district officials reported the incident to police and directed principals at EUSD campuses to "talk with children about safety while walking to and from school," Baird stated.
