Car smashes into tree, driver trapped

CARLSBAD – A driver had to be pulled from his car after it crashed into a palm tree in Carlsbad early Thursday morning. 
 
The crash occurred at 2:49 a.m. on Carlsbad Village Drive, between El Camino Real and Celinda Drive. According to Carlsbad police, the car carrying two people was going east on Carlsbad Village Drive when the driver lost control taking a curve and smashed into a tree.
 
The passenger was able to crawl to safety, but Carlsbad firefighters had to rescue the trapped driver. Both men were rushed to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla.
 
The stretch of road was closed and a Sig Alert was issued sometime before 4:30 a.m. while Carlsbad police cleared the scene. 
 
Alcohol may have contributed to the crash, police said. The condition of the victims were not confirmed.
