SAN DIEGO – A woman walked away unhurt after her car collided into a large power pole in Clairemont Mesa late Sunday night, bringing the pole crashing down on her car.

The crash occurred at around 11 p.m. in the area of Balboa Avenue and Mt. Everest Boulevard.  San Diego police report the pole slammed down on the car’s hood, just missing the driver’s seat. The driver was uninjured.

“I heard a crash, it sounded like a bolt of lightning, maybe even a small plane crash,” a neighbor told 10News. “And then another bang, which was the electrical popping off again. And that was it, lights and everything went off. I went to the door everything was blacked out.”

The wreck knocked out power to the immediate area for several hours. San Diego Gas & Electric crews responded and restored power early Monday morning. They expected to have a new power pole installed by 7 a.m. Monday.

The driver was arrested on drunken driving charges.
