REDLANDS, Calif. (AP) — Investigators are trying to determine why a high school teacher started two small fires on campus while classes were in session.

Police say Timothy Mark Ridgway was arrested Friday on suspicion of arson at Redlands East Valley High School east of Los Angeles.

It wasn't known Sunday if the 59-year-old teacher has an attorney.

KABC-TV reports Ridgway is suspected of setting fire to a banner in a building with 300 students inside, as well as lighting a piece of paper in his classroom.

School staff was able to quickly extinguish both fires, one of which damaged a wall. There were no injuries.

The motive for starting the fires is unclear.
