SAN DIEGO -- A 38-year-old alleged gang member named in three felony arrest warrants was behind bars after a lengthy standoff at a Serra Mesa-area apartment.

Members of the multi-agency San Diego Fugitive Task Force looking for Joseph Caldwell Curtis spotted him arriving at a relative's apartment on Hurlbut Street near Sterett Place late Thursday afternoon. Curtis was on probation and was wanted in connection with auto theft, burglary, domestic violence and false-impersonation incidents, according to task force member and sheriff's Sgt. Chris Davis.

Task force members surrounded the upstairs apartment, where Curtis was allegedly holed up. Davis said a child was also in the apartment for a time but was able to climb out a window and reach officers waiting below.

Crisis negotiators and a Sheriff's SWAT team were summoned. Once a search warrant was obtained, SWAT deputies burst in and arrested Curtis late Thursday night, according to Davis. He was subsequently booked into jail and was being held without bail.
