REDWOOD VALLEY, Calif. - The wildfires sweeping across Northern California claimed the life of a 14-year-old boy and left his parents and older sister hospitalized with burns.

Kai Shepherd and his family tried to escape down a mountain from their remote Redwood Valley home about 125 miles (200 kilometers) north of San Francisco early Monday.

Neighbor Paul Hanssen survived the flames that he described as resembling a nuclear blast. He found the Shepherds on the ground outside their home and called for help.

Sara and Jon Shepherd and their 17-year-old daughter, Kressa, are being treated at burn centers. Both of Kressa's legs have been amputated below the knees.
