OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- A 7-year-old who ran out from behind an ice cream truck and was struck by a vehicle in an Oceanside neighborhood near Libby Lake Park Sunday night is expected to survive, police said.

The boy was airlifted to Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego to be treated for an avulsion-type or bruising injury to his chest after he was struck in the 200 block of Holiday Way near Anne Sladon Street shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday, Oceanside police Lt. Matt Cole said.

Cole said the child darted out from behind the ice cream truck parked on the northbound side of the roadway and into the path of a vehicle headed southbound at about 30 miles per hour. The crash left a dent in the vehicle's front fender.
