CALEXICO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Border Patrol agents Sunday arrested a previously deported sex offender they say entered the U.S. illegally.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection says around 11:15 Sunday night, agents patrolling near the Calexico Port of Entry encountered a man illegally in the U.S. Agents arrested Jose Luis Vargas-Hernandez, 27.

After checking his record, agents discovered that Vargas had been previously convicted of a misdemeanor sex offense for sexual conduct with a 16 or 17-year-old.

Agents also found that Vargas was ordered removed by an immigration judge in 2016.

“Our job as Border Patrol Agents, is not only to enforce immigration laws but to ensure the safety and well-being of our community,” said Supervisory Border Patrol Agent Joyce C. Golosino.

Vargas will be prosecuted for re-entry after removal.
