A bomb threat at Naval Base San Diego Thursday morning prompted base officials to evacuate the pier -- the focus of the threat -- and a ship docked nearby, but nothing hazardous was found during a subsequent search.

Someone at the base commonly known as 32nd Street reported finding the written threat that referenced the vicinity of Pier 7 shortly before 9 a.m., according to Navy spokesman Brian O'Rourke. The base was not placed on lockdown, he said.

Authorities evacuated the pier and the USS Essex, which was docked at the time, but lifted the order when a search turned up nothing hazardous, O'Rourke said. Naval Base San Diego has since returned to normal operations.

Base officials say they have received 12 separate bomb threats since November 2015.

Special Agent in Charge Gunnar Newquist said, "Threats of this nature are serious offenses requiring a significant response from law enforcement and enhancement to our force protection measures. We are committed to protecting the lives of these workers and the property of the United States government. We continue to work this investigation with full confidence in identifying and prosecuting the individual(s) responsible to the fullest extent possible."

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service and BAE Systems are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the individual(s) responsible for making these false bomb threats.
