A chase to catch a suspected bank robber ended with the bomb squad detonating what was considered a 'suspicious object.'

Carlsbad police stopped the suspect's silver Toyota sedan at Palomar Airport Road and Paseo Del Norte. They believe the elderly man robbed a bank in San Marcos.

The suspect was taken into custody, but officers found a suspicious device in the passenger compartment. The San Diego Sheriff's Bomb/Arson Unit was called to the scene.

They discovered the object was not a bomb, but detonated it just in case.

Police also found a gun in the car as well as cash believed to have been taken in the robbery.

The suspect was turned over to investigators from the San Diego Sheriff’s Department and FBI for investigation of the bank robbery.
