FALLBROOK -- A crash involving three big rigs on Interstate 15 near Fallbrook early Thursday left at least one truck driver severely injured and prompted authorities to shut down the northbound freeway.

At about 1:40 a.m., a semi-truck was traveling slowly in the far right lane on northbound I-15 near Mission Road when it was rear-ended by another semi that was unable to stop in time, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Both semi-trucks then stalled and their two drivers exited the vehicles and stood on the right shoulder awaiting assistance.

However, at 2:04 a.m., a third semi-truck approached the collision scene. The driver, 65-year-old Salvador Munoz of San Bernardino, was unable to stop and crashed into the stalled big rigs, CHP reports.

Munoz was transported to Palomar Medical Center with significant injuries.

The wrecked trucks, debris and emergency responders temporarily blocked the entire northbound freeway and a SigAlert was issued, but it was lifted about 6 a.m., authorities said.
