SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - How much would you pay to be an NFL mascot? Online bids for the Los Angeles Chargers’ unofficial mascot are at least five figures.
Dan Jauregui was ‘Boltman’ for the Chargers for 22 years when they were in San Diego and last week, he decided to retire the costume.
“At my age I can’t do this anymore” said Jauregui, “It’s time to pass it on to a younger little stallion to take over.”
That younger stallion must have some serious change though.
Jauregui opened the auction online for ‘Boltman’ and its intellectual property rights last week at $5,000 — with a few days before it closes, bids are more than $70,000.
“The reality is I have a lot more invested in the actual character with the five characters that I’ve done over the last two decades,” said Jauregui.
Half of the proceeds of the sale will go toward Radys Children's Hospital.
He doesn’t know who any of the bidders are, but would prefer ‘Boltman’ be bought by the Chargers.
“We’re hoping that the Raiders don’t bid on it or even the Rams,” said Jauregui, “Because we know what they would do with it on game days.”
The auction closes Sunday at 3 p.m.
