A 34-year-old woman suspected of stealing a vehicle in Carlsbad was in custody Sunday following a long pursuit by police which ended in Chula Vista when spike strips were used to disable her vehicle.

The incident began at 6:53 p.m. Saturday, Carlsbad police spokeswoman Jodee Sasway said, when police received a call about a stolen car and officers responded to the area of Melrose Drive and Rancho Bravado.

"The vehicle was tracked west to Interstate 5 and then southbound," Sasway said.

Carlsbad police, with the assistance of County Sheriff's, San Diego police, the CHP and a police helicopter, tracked the vehicle headed southbound on I-5 for 46 miles.

"Sheriff's deputies deployed spike strips in the area of H Street and I-5 in Chula Vista," Sasway said. "The vehicle crossed the spike strips damaging its tires. The vehicle continued to flee for a short distance and then stopped."

The suspect was identified as Jana Elaine Jones of Anaheim.

Sasway said Jones was booked into Vista Detention Facility on suspicion of felony evading, auto theft, possession of stolen property and resisting arrest.
