An 8-year-old boy drowned in a community pool in Mission Valley Saturday night and the San Diego Police Child Abuse Unit was investigating, according to authorities.

Paramedics and police responded to a 911 call at the Del Rio apartment complex at 2228 Fenton Pkwy. near Rio San Diego Drive shortly before 8 p.m., San Diego Police Sgt. Tom Sullivan said.

The boy was found face down in the pool, and an off-duty lifeguard was performing CPR when officers arrived. The officers continued CPR efforts until paramedics arrived and transported the boy to Rady Children's Hospital.

He was pronounced dead at 10:30 p.m. at the hospital, Sullivan said.

The boy's 73-year-old grandfather lost consciousness during the commotion and had to be transported to a hospital also, according to Sullivan.

The boy was swimming in the pool wearing a mask and snorkel, while numerous people were having a party in the area, Sullivan said.

The identities of the boy and his grandfather were not released by authorities and it was not clear why child abuse detectives took over the investigation.
