Three motorists were arrested for suspected drunk driving and two were arrested for suspected drug possession and probation violations Friday night after being stopped at two police checkpoints in Escondido and National City, authorities said.

Both checkpoints were in operation from 6 p.m. to midnight.

The Escondido sobriety/driver's license checkpoint was set up in the area of Avenida Del Diablo and West Valley Parkway, according to Lt. Mike Kearney.

Of the 1,120 vehicles that drove through the checkpoint, 762 of them were released after primary screening and another 25 were sent to secondary screening. Five vehicles were impounded, eight citations were issued for driving on a suspended license, unlicensed driving and no proof of insurance, Kearney said.

Two people were arrested for alleged possession of methamphetamine, heroin, and probation violations.

The National City checkpoint was set up at 200 Mile of Cars Way, which led to one arrest for alleged drunk driving, according to Sgt. Jeffrey Meeks.

There were 570 vehicles screened at the checkpoint. Twelve drivers were cited or arrested for operating a vehicle unlicensed or while their license was suspended or revoked. Eight cars were impounded, Meeks said.

National City police will be conducting another drunk driving checkpoint in April along with several saturation patrols in their ongoing commitment to lowering deaths and injuries, according to Meeks.
