SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A driver faces smuggling charges after four Chinese citizens were discovered in the trunk of his car as he tried to enter the U.S. from Mexico.
According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials, the incident happened at about 5:45 p.m. on March 14, at the San Ysidro Port of Entry.
CBP officials said the 24-year-old driver, a U.S. citizen, entered the border crossing while driving a 2014 Chrysler 200. A canine team dog alerted officers during an inspection, prompting officers to open the trunk.
Officers found three Chinese women and a Chinese man crammed in the trunk. The foursome, who were not legally allowed to enter the U.S., were placed on an immigration hold "to initiate removal from the United States at the conclusion of the criminal proceedings."
The car was seized, and the driver is expected to face federal charges.
