SANTA MONICA, Calif. - A man arrested on suspicion of drugging a woman's drink in a Santa Monica hotel bar is scheduled to be arraigned in court Tuesday.

Michael Hsu, 24, was arrested Thursday for allegedly attempting to commit rape and allegedly drugging a drink to commit rape, Santa Monica Police Sgt. Greg Smiley said.

Three women caught Hsu in the act while he allegedly tried to slip something into the drink of the female companion he was with, who had gone to the bathroom of the Fig restaurant inside the Fairmont Hotel, according to Fox 11 in Los Angeles.

The witnesses took to Facebook to share the encounter in a post that's been shared thousands of times.

"He pulled her glass toward him, kind of awkwardly, then he took out a little black vial," one of the witnesses wrote. "He opened it up and dropped something in. Then he tried to play it cool, like checking his phone and hiding the vial in his hand and then trying to bring it back down slyly."

The women who saw the act take place approached the woman in the bathroom and alerted her to what had happened, according to the report. The woman said Hsu was actually one of her closest friends.

The restaurant staff was alerted and then delayed in bringing the bill so the police could be contacted, the witnesses wrote in their post.

Arriving officers questioned Hsu, who was arrested.

Hsu was being held in lieu of $1 million bail and is due in Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday, according to county inmate records.
