SAN YSIDRO (KGTV) -- Two people were struck and killed early Sunday morning when the group they were with ran across the freeway near the San Ysidro border crossing, U.S. Border Patrol officials said.

The crash happened at about 1:45 a.m. after a van was spotted driving the wrong way along Interstate 5, according to Border Patrol officer Tekae Michael.

The van was heading north on the southbound side of the I-5, then stopped near the Camino de la Plaza exit.

At least nine passengers exited the vehicle and ran across the freeway when two of them were struck and killed, Michael said.

Seven people were taken into custody.

Authorities could not confirm if there was an active pursuit by Border Patrol.

A portion of the highway was shut down for a few hours. All lanes have been completely reopened.
