SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Tacos are a staple of San Diego’s diet - so we’re celebrating National Taco Day with deals and freebies.
The word “taco” is a Mexican innovation. Theories about its origin suggest the meaning was created by silver miners, who used explosives made from gunpowder with a paper taco-like wrapping. Another possibility comes from indigenous language Nahuatl. The word “tlahco”, according to a Wikipedia posting, means “half” or “in the middle” - where the filling is placed in a taco.
No matter the origin - it's a delicious invention.
