It may be a while before you can shop in-person at Ikea, but in the meantime, you can now shop online while still enjoying their famous meatballs. The Swedish home goods retailer just released their iconic meatballs recipe, so you can make this yummy dish in the comfort and safety of your own home.
And in total Ikea fashion, the meatballs recipe includes a step-by-step diagram that mirrors their furniture assembly steps. U.K. Ikea tweeted out an image of the easy-to-follow recipe that will have your kitchen smelling like your favorite dish at the Ikea cafe in no time:

In addition to offering up their famous meatballs recipe, Ikea also included directions for the popular cream sauce that traditionally accompanies their meatballs.
To make the meatballs, you will need ground beef and ground pork. In the directions from U.K. Ikea, the recipe calls for minced pork and minced beef, which is similar but not identical to what Americans called ground beef and ground pork. In America, we grind our meats, while in the U.K. and Australia, they mince them, though the industrial machines used in all three countries are pretty much the same.
You will also need an onion, garlic, breadcrumbs and whole milk. If you are dairy-free you can try subbing the whole milk with your favorite plant-based milk alternative, but this could alter the taste, so your results may vary if you’re trying to completely replicate the Ikea meatballs recipe.
To make the cream sauce, you will need beef stock, veggie stock, butter, flour, soy sauce, Dijon mustard and “double cream.” Again, this just comes down to a difference of terminology. In the U.K., double cream is basically what we Americans call heavy whipping cream, but it can be a little bit thicker than what we are used to on this side of the pond.

Ikea’s Swedish Meatballs with Cream Sauce
For the meatballs:
- 500 grams (1.1 pounds) ground beef
- 250 grams (heavy ½ pound) ground pork
- 1 onion finely chopped
- 1 clove of garlic (crushed or minced)
- 100 grams (3.5 ounces) breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 5 tablespoons of whole milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the cream sauce:
- Dash of oil
- 40 grams (1.4 ounces) butter
- 40 grams (1.4 ounces) plain flour
- 150 ml (5 ounces) vegetable stock
- 150 ml (5 ounces) beef stock
- 150 ml (5 ounces) thick double cream
- 2 teaspoons soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
For the meatballs:
- Combine beef and pork mince and mix with your fingers to break up any lumps. Add finely chopped onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, egg and mix. Add milk and season well with salt and pepper.
- Shape mixture into small, round balls. Place on a clean plate, cover and store in the fridge for 2 hours. (This will help them hold their shape while cooking.)
- In a frying pan, heat oil on medium heat. When hot, gently add your meatballs and brown on all sides.
- When browned, add to an ovenproof dish and cover. Place in a hot oven, 350 degrees Fahrenheit or 180 degrees Celsius, and cook for a further 30 minutes.
For the cream sauce:
- Melt the butter in a frying pan. Whisk in the flour and continue cooking, stirring continuously for 2 minutes.
- Add the vegetable stock and beef stock and continue to stir. Add the thick double cream, soy sauce and Dijon mustard.
- Bring to a simmer and allow the sauce to thicken. Continue to stir.
- When ready to eat, serve with your favorite potatoes — either creamy mash or mini new boiled potatoes. Enjoy!
