SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Firefighters from 30 different departments in San Diego hit the streets Wednesday morning for the 20th annual Firefighter Boot Drive.

Firefighters held out their boots at 100 different intersections across the county, hoping morning commuters would dump a couple of bucks in.

All of the money raised benefits programs and services at the local Burn Institute.

“Some of our programs that we’ll invest the money into are Camp Beyond the Scars, and that’s a special camp for burn injured children that are ages 8 to 17,” said Burn Institute Executive Director Susan Day. “We also have a family retreat for young burn survivors and their family members.”

There’s also a retreat for adult burn survivors, as well as several ongoing support groups. Money raised will also go to an emergency fund that helps families in crisis.

In 2018, firefighters raised about $208,000 across the county.
