If you’ve ever felt guilty about using boxed cake mix to create your desserts, this recipe will change that. This twist on a classic chocolate cake from Kitchen Fun With My Three Sons uses the cake mix, but adds some cherry flavor to it and walks you through how to make the frosting, so you’ll be doing more than enough to qualify this as being “homemade.”

The addition of an unconventional item, Cherry Dr. Pepper, will take your boxed cake mix to the next level — and chances are, you’ve already got some in your fridge. So, pull out a can of soda and the boxed mix and get to baking!

Along with the soda and the cake mix, you’ll need maraschino cherries, butter, powdered sugar and chocolate shavings to complete the cake and frosting.

All you have to do to make the batter is combine the soda, dry cake mix and cherries. Pop it in the oven, and once it’s cooled, whip together butter, powdered sugar and cherry juice to make a simple, delicious cherry-flavored frosting.

Top with chocolate shavings and you’ve made a homemade dessert that’ll taste amazing.

Who would have thought cake mix and soda could create something so decadent?

Believe it or not, this isn’t the only way you can use the soda you’ve got on hand to make food for your guests. For instance, 7Up can be used to make a sweet, lemony cake, if you’re looking for another dessert option. This recipe from Culinary Hill shows how 7Up, cake mix and a bundt pan can yield one unexpectedly fancy-looking dessert.

And if you’re in need of a savory appetizer, soda can come to the rescue in this department, too.

This recipe from With A Blast shows how you can use Coca-Cola to create the perfect marinade for meatballs. It calls for tomato sauce, green bell peppers, Worcestershire sauce and cola to create a flavorful mixture for slow-cooking ground beef meatballs in.

Easy, right? Looks like it’s time to crack open a soda and get cooking!
