Woman suspected of stealing Camp Pendleton Marine's rent checks

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A Camp Pendleton Marine is out thousands of dollars in rent money after a woman stole his checks.

Anaheim police said the Marine, a newlywed stationed at Camp Pendleton, is renting an apartment at the Hampton Pointe Apartments in Anaheim.

Anaheim police Sgt. Daron Wyatt said the Marine paid his rent with MoneyGrams.

Three checks worth more than $2,000 were stolen, according to police. The checks were left at a mailbox in the leasing office, but they were swiped, along with others at nearby complexes.

Police are searching for a woman seen in security cameras with a child pushing a shopping cart. She was spotted cashing the checks at two different Wal-Mart stores in San Bernardino.

Police believe the woman is using a stolen identity and may have altered the checks.

"He's not only fighting for us, but he's fighting for her, and she goes out and commits this crime," Wyatt said.
