SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Witnesses described the chaos that unfolded in the shooting at a University City apartment complex swimming pool.

"I heard people screaming," said Gabriele Sulli, who lives at the La Jolla Crossroads apartment complex on Judicial Drive.

Just after 6 p.m. Sunday, San Diego police responded to reports of shots being fired at the complex's swimming pool area.

Sulli was on his way to the pool, where a birthday party was happening, but when he got there, he saw horrified guests trying to escape.

Sulli told 10News, "There is a crazy guy that is shooting, so we just decided to run … we literally saw people jumping out from the fences and running away like crazy."

A resident who saw what was going on from his apartment said, "There were two people that had already been shot that were laying on the ground. One was trying to crawl toward the other one to help."

The resident said he spotted the shooter and described him as "relaxed."

"We could see the shooter sitting there with a beer in one hand and a gun in the other," the resident said.

The shooter, identified as 49-year-old Peter Selis, was seen by witnesses and officers reloading after the initial barrage of gunfire.

Selis was shot and killed by officers after police said he fired at law enforcement.

One shooting victim, an unidentified woman, died at the hospital. Seven others were injured, some critically, according to police.
