OTAY LAKE, Calif. - Rainwater spilled over two dams just east of Chula Vista Tuesday. Hikers, motorists, and cyclists all stopped to take pictures of water cresting at the Upper and Lower Otay Dams.
“I talked to a couple guys that have lived here their whole life and they said it hasn’t done this since the eighties,” said Chula Vista resident Shawn Douglas who rode his bike down to see the much larger Lower Otay Dam. “Seven-pounds a gallon, you know. Imagine how many gallons are out there.”
The City of San Diego owns both dam and the water in the reservoir. A city spokeswoman said the last time any significant water spilled over the Lower Otay Dam was 2005.
All of the water spills safely into the Otay River.
