Two people were transported to the hospital with major injuries when their vehicle smashed into a palm tree Saturday.
Police say the victims lost control of the vehicle around 8 p.m. on the transition ramp from the northbound State Route 163 to eastbound Interstate 8.
The California Highway Patrol said the vehicle veered off the roadway and smashed into a palm tree, trapping the victims inside.
Crews with the San Diego Fire Department rescued the two people from their vehicle within minutes of the crash.
An investigation is underway to determine how the victims lost control of their vehicle.
