SAN DIEGO -- A dog at the Bonita Animal Shelter is breaking records, but not the good kind.

Tootsie is a 4-year-old pit bull who has been at the shelter for 373 days.

“She is our current long-time reigning queen right now." Department of Animal Services Deputy Director Dan DeSousa said. "Of all the dogs that have been in our shelter, she’s been here the longest.”

Tootsie came to the shelter as a stray last February.

“We scratch our heads every day saying ‘why hasn’t someone come in to take her home?’” DeSousa said.

He says part of the reason she hasn't been adopted might be because she's a pit bull.

“It’s unfortunate that a lot of people have stereotypes about this type of dog," he said. "But if you look at her, you see she’s playful, she’s affectionate.”

DeSousa says Tootsie likes to be the center of attention, so she would probably do best if she were the only dog in the house. He says she is very smart, great with people and gentle with children.

“She’s an ideal dog and she just wants a home,” he said. “She is energetic and lonely.”

If you are interested in adopting Tootsie, you can visit the Bonita shelter at 5821 Sweetwater Road, or call
619-767-2675.

DeSousa says there are also 130 other dogs at the Bonita location waiting to find their forever homes.
