On Friday, July 1 at 7:30 p.m. Carlsbad Police received a 911 call from a citizen regarding a domestic battery that just occurred in the 100 block of Juniper Avenue between Carlsbad Boulevard and Garfield Street.

A victim had fled to a neighbor's home and had a cut to her forehead when her boyfriend slammed her head onto the hardwood floor in their residence. She identified the suspect as Gabriel Navarro and armed himself with a shotgun and was still somewhere inside their residence.

The Carlsbad Police Department SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiations Team made several attempts to contact Navarro but he did not respond. Carlsbad Police SWAT Officers searched the residence with the assistance of a Carlsbad Police K9. The K9 located Navarro hiding in the attic of the residence.

Navarro was arrested and transported to the hospital prior to being booked into Vista Jail on domestic battery charges.

A special weapons team was called to a home in Carlsbad Friday night because a domestic violence suspect would not exit, according to broadcast reports.

Authorities received reports of the incident near Juniper Avenue and Garfield Street at 7:35 p.m., and set up in the area of Jefferson Elementary School.

Witnesses say the man beat his girlfriend, who was hospitalized.
