Stranger camps in Ocean Beach yard

An Ocean Beach man was met with an unusual sight when he came out to his front porch Tuesday morning to enjoy his morning cup of coffee.

Stephen Burr says at first he didn't notice the stranger sleeping on his porch swing near Cable Street and Santa Cruz Avenue.

“I yelled at him too. ‘Get off my lawn!’” Burr said.

He says the man just rolled over and went back to sleep, so Burr went back into his home and grabbed a baseball bat.

“I woke him up pretty abruptly when I banged on the metal [swing] with the bat," Burr said. "I think it scared him a little bit.”

He says the man left all of his trash and some of his belongings in his yard, and he saw him tuck a knife into his backpack before he left.

“He said 'we’ll see how well your bat does against my skateboard' and stuff like that," Burr said. "And kind of headed off and then kept coming back a couple times. Skated by a few times calling me names.”

Burr says by the time police arrived, the man was gone.

“They said they were going to go look for the guy and have a talk with him, yeah, we’ve seen this guy around," Burr said. "Go look for him and have a talk with him.”

“First thing in the morning the last thing I want to do is have a confrontation,” Burr said.
