Storm rips patio from ocean cliff

Posted

Monday's storm left a permanent mark on some homes along Sunset Cliffs.

Tekin Balkir has lived there for 22 years, and has enjoyed the views their back patio offered. He says Monday, he heard a loud crash; when he looked outside, the patio was gone.

“I heard it, but it was too late already,” Balkir said.

The wind and rain weakened the patio and sent it crashing onto the cliffs below and into the ocean. Balkir is thankful no one was walking on the cliffs underneath when the patio collapsed.

“I was worrying about somebody going to get hurt,” he said.

Engineers inspected the homes, and declared their foundations to be safe and stable for now. Tenants say their landlord is working with the city, engineers, and the Coastal Commission to figure out how to fix the problem.

Balkir says they will have to be a little more careful, but will still be enjoying the views from the backyard.

“You can’t do nothing about this, mother nature, you know? Big storm,” he said.
