(KGTV) -- U.S. Senator Kamala Harris toured part of Naval Base San Diego on Friday. She took a look at U.S. Navy Submarine Squadron 11 and it's powerful role in our nation's defense.
Senator Harris went below sea level to tour the USS Scranton. It's one of four nuclear-powered submarines at the base. She said her visit comes as a way to meet with our service members and make sure our fleet of submarines is the most powerful in the world.
She says by spending time with our military, she understands the needs of our veterans and their families.
"We need to treat them accordingly and that means giving them the resources they need, the benefits they need and also taking care of them after they come back from their tour," said Harris.
"There is a lot more work to be done to support our service members when they come back home around job training and getting them to a place where they can put their skills to work when we give them the support to do that."
She says she would also like to see changes with the VA and more resources dedicated to treating mental health issues.
