San Diego Gas & Electric touted its Renewable Meter Adapter Friday at a home in Rancho Bernardo.
One of its employees invented the adapter that makes connecting rooftop solar panels cheaper, faster and safer.
"The process to have it done was actually a lot simpler than I thought," said homeowner Robert Clossin.
"It's designed for solar and wind customers," said Ken Parks, an SDG&E Customer Generation Manager and co-inventor of the RMA.
The RMA can be installed in less than 30 minutes and costs new solar customers roughly $1,300.
"Typically, it will take four to six weeks to get a service panel upgrade and tons of money," said Parks.
That's the best-case scenario.
Parks said upgrading an electric panel and tunneling underground to a nearby transformer could cost a homeowner upwards of $10,000 and may take weeks to finish.
The Renewable Meter Adapter also makes installation safer because solar crews only need to plug into a single box that's already mounted outside the house.
