An elderly woman was found dead in a house fire in La Jolla Wednesday night, according to the fire department.
The fire broke out in a home in the 1200 block of Via Barranca. Firefighters said the home is owned by a church.
A neighbor was one of the first people to see the smoke.
"When I saw that, I immediately ran over and had my wife call 911," the neighbor told 10News. "When I got to the door, I couldn't even get in, the smoke was so thick. You could see the flames within it. It was heartbreaking."
The woman's body was discovered in the garage. Neighbors said she was in her 90s.
