SAN MARCOS, Calif. – An elderly woman was struck and killed by a friend who was backing his car out of a parking spot early Wednesday morning in Lake San Marcos.
The crash occurred about 5:45 a.m. in the 1600 block of Circa Del Lago.
According to California Highway Patrol, the victim and driver, both 83, reside in a nearby retirement community and were preparing to leave in a car. The driver told the victim to wait on the sidewalk while he backed his car out of the parking spot. Both had walkers and he reportedly wanted to make it easier for her to get in.
As he started backing up, the woman walked behind the car for an unknown reason. He struck and ran her over, CHP said. He got out and yelled for help and someone nearby called 911.
The woman was transported by ambulance to Palomar Medical Center, where she died, CHP said.
No drugs or alcohol were suspected in the crash and no charges would be filed. The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office is investigating.
No names were immediately released.
