Off-road racer Mark Luhtala dies after head-on crash at Baja 1000

SAN DIEGO -- An off-road racer who crashed in Baja over the weekend and had to have his leg amputated died this week at UC San Diego Medical Center.
 
Mark Luhtala, 48, crashed head-on with another racer Saturday while competing in the Baja 1000 race. He was recovering in San Diego when he suffered a heart attack and died.
 
The crash left another racer, 29-year-old Cody Parkhouse, in critical condition. Parkhouse is also at UC San Diego Medical Center.
 
Luhtala is from Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
