An Oceanside family said they were in shock after a drive down I-5 turned into a possible brush with death.

The Henze’s said they were driving down I-5, heading northbound, around 2:00 p.m. Monday. That's when someone threw a large object off the Palm Overpass and hit their Mini Cooper.

“Heard this loud ‘bang’ on the roof, and was like, woah, what was that?” Stephen Henze said. “I had no choice, I didn’t see it coming.”

Henze said he and his wife called California Highway Patrol, and an officer told them another driver had already reported seeing someone throw something off of the bridge and onto their car.

Henze said the family expects a repair bill in the hundreds, but feels lucky they weren’t seriously hurt.

“Your life can be changed in an instant when a piece of metal flies through," Henze said. "If that would have gone through the windshield, I wouldn’t be talking to you right now, it would be probably a different story."

Henze said he hopes someone saw something and calls the police.
