A sign in Vista has some residents doing a double-take and petitioning for it to be changed.
“Vista, that’s V-i-s-t-a, Vista,” said Katherine Kurner of Vista.
Kurner was born and raised here.
“A lot of pride, it’s a great, great city,” Said Kurner. “Growing up in Vista I’ve seen a ton of changes.”
She said the changes have been mostly positive.
“We have great restaurants that are coming in, we have wonderful little shops who are coming in,” said Kurner.
She was so excited when she heard her hometown was getting a new sign.
“Like a little kid on Christmas who’s expecting something fantastic and they get that," Kurner said, referring to the sign that says Paseo Santa Fe.
“It’s a beautiful sign, it just needs to say Vista,” said Kurner. “It’s a great city, it’s a great place to live, and we need representation and this is not it.”
The area where the sign was put up was run down, but is now being revitalized. The city tells 10News the community has been calling the area Paseo Santa Fe for 10 to 15 years now.
“I don’t think it’s fair at all. I think the people who live, work and shop here in Vista, we should have a say,” said Kurner.
The city says it now has three district areas; Vista Village, Historic Main Street and Paseo Santa Fe.
“This is just a little bit of a slap in the face. For long-time Vista residents who really love their city, which is called, Vista, by the way,” she said.
The city wants to highlight the area, like San Diego’s Gaslamp District or Hillcrest.
“I just don’t, I just don’t get it at all,” said Kurner.
On top of the sign is the city's official bird and flower; the hummingbird and California lilac.
“It just simply has to be changed to Vista, I can’t imagine it would be that difficult to do."
There is no plan to put up a sign with just the city name at this time.
