SAN DIEGO (KGTV)--A new kind of coffee shop in Ocean Beach is hoping to teach people in San Diego, and help farmers around the world.

Saturday was the grand opening of OB Beans Coffee Roasters on Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach.

“We’re a few local guys starting a local business," Ben Nease told 10News.

Nease says not only is their goal is to bring people together in the act of buying a cup of coffee, but also to help support fair trade farming and local causes.

OB Beans specializes in importing directly from small farms in Central America, Mexico, Ethopia, and Sumatra - which makes sense, since their motto is "Doing good farm to cup."

“Where coffee comes from and the farmers that work hard to make coffee quality and all the hands that touch it, and just the cultures that it connects is crazy and I feel like that world hasn’t been fully dissected by the Ocean Beach community so we really just want to bring that awareness on why coffee tastes good,” Nease said.

A portion of every cup sold goes to charities like YoungLife, Ride4Water, and iThinkBig.

Nease says they roast every drop of coffee in Ocean Beach, but wants people to know they can feel comfortable coming into the shop just to hang out.

“I don’t want people to think that we’re some stuck up coffee people, because we’re not,” Nease said. "I want people to feel a community and a home here."

OB Beans Coffee Roasters is located at 4879 Newport Avenue. They are open daily from 7am - 7pm.
