SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A group of more than 50 Navy WAVES are gathered in San Diego for a reunion.
These women enlisted in the U.S. Navy in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, before women were allowed to become sailors.
WAVES stands for “Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service” – the group was created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
WAVES Veteran Jeanie Morshead tells 10News us the women in this group did jobs that included hospital corpsmen, air traffic controllers, radiomen, techs and airplane maintenance.
“We were ahead of our time,” said Dee Sabin, another WAVES veteran.
