SAN DIEGO – Dozens of people were holding a protest Wednesday over a Navy construction project slated to break ground this week on the Silver Strand, which connects Coronado island to Imperial Beach.
Members of the Kumeyaay Native American tribe are asking the Navy to preserve a burial site that was found in a marshland area where construction is slated to begin on a new Navy SEAL training center.
According to organizers, they are not asking the Navy to halt construction, but to move the facility slightly to the left of where their Kumeyaay relatives are buried.
About 50 protesters arrived at 5 a.m. and planned to remain until 2 p.m. Wednesday.
