The use of electronic cigarettes, or vaping, will no longer be allowed on U.S. Navy ships and other craft in light of reports of explosions and injuries.
Navy officials said the policy was put in place "to protect the safety and welfare of Sailors and to protect the ships, submarines, aircraft and equipment."
The ban applies to all Navy aircraft, heavy equipment and vessels, including submarines, boats and other craft.
Several sailors have reported burns and other injuries from explosions and subsequent fires that stem from e-cigarette battery overheating.
According to Navy officials, the ban on e-cigarettes will take effect in May. The new policy will remain in effect until "a final determination can be made following a thorough analysis."
Sailors on shore can vape while on base in designated smoking areas only.
