Marijuana legalization raises questions about hash oil

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - A butane honey oil explosion in Carlsbad Wednesday has some asking what is legal following the passage of Prop 46 last year, which legalized marijuana for recreational use.

Federal authorities consider producing or possessing hash oil illegal, but state and county authorities look at it differently.

Some commercial producers are allowed to make it if they use CO2 to extract it.

The hash oil made in most home labs is produced using butane, which is highly flammable.

The DEA says they've seen more butane honey oil cases in San Diego than any other city.

Local authorities say people can possess hash oil in small amounts.
