EL CAJON, C.A. — Hauati Fa’anunu, the man convicted of murdering his wife, Mary Fa'anunu on New Years Day 2016 was sentenced to 50 years to life in prison Wednesday.
Mary’s friends and family read victim impact statements before the sentencing.
“No decent father would take his children's mother away forever and put them through this awful trial,” said Mary’s sister, Sara Wright.
They wanted the man who ended her life as the new year was beginning to hear what they had to say.
“I loved her sincerity and the love she expressed, always keeping it real and sharing she was just trying to do her best,” said Mary’s mother, Elisabeth Newbold.
Mary and Hauati had six children together. They were in the process of getting a divorce.
“Two parents had to bury their own child, all because of this man's bruised ego,” said Wright.
Fa’anunu never turned around during their statements. He sat quietly, sometimes wiping away tears.
“My parents treated this man like their own son,” said Wright.
Those who attended the sentencing wore white t-shirts with words that described the mother.
"She was the sweetest, most considerate out of all of us,” said Wright.
Mary’s brother and sister-in-law are now taking care of the six kids. This gofundme page has been set up to help: https://www.gofundme.com/MaryMemorial#updates
