The priest of this Catholic church of the immaculate conception in Old Town San Diego is under fire for writing democrats and Hillary Clinton share the same stance on hot-button issues as Satan.
Father Richard Perozich told 10News he wrote the page-long article called ‘Voting Catholic’ in the parish newsletter.
The parish is also a polling place for upcoming election.
“I didn’t tell people for whom to vote,” Perozich said. “But I will lay out the life issues that are consistant with our Catholic teachings."
“There was some catholic teaching mixed in there, but then there was a whole lot of other things that have nothing to do with Catholicism and frankly are misleading people,” said
Kevin Eckery, Spokesman for San Diego Bishop Robert McElroy, adding the church is supposed to stay out of politics.
“There’s no Catholic position on the public debt. There’s no Catholic position on the Second Amendment, and there is a Catholic position when it comes to immigration, and it’s quite clear, Catholic teaching says it’s repugnant to fan the flames of prejudice against other groups.,” Eckery said.
“It’s troubling to me because this kind of material can lead people astray. I’m not talking about politics. I’m talking about humanity,” said San Diego Christian Unitarian Minister Jim Grant.
“The people who gave Jesus the hardest time were people who had rules which were dehumanizing. Some of this is dehumanizing,” Grant said.
“The most important thing viewers should know is they are not going to hell for voting for a republican. They are not going to hell for voting for a democrat,” Eckery said.
