ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Several employees escaped serious injury after a car driven by an elderly man crashed into an Escondido AT&T store.

The incident, which was captured on surveillance video, happened Monday at around 10:20 a.m., at the store at 1268 Auto Park Way.

A witness said an elderly man was waiting in a car in front of the store while a friend was completing a transaction inside. Once the friend finished, he got into the car and the driver began to reverse out of the parking space.

However, according to the witness, the driver pulled back into the parking spot after seeing another car approaching. After it appeared to be safe to back up, the driver was ready to reverse but apparently did not put the vehicle in reverse, causing the car to go forward and into the store.

Surveillance video shows the car smashing through the store as workers jumped out of the vehicle’s path. The car came to a stop in the back of the store, near an inventory room, the witness said.

No one was injured, but the witness said the driver was visibly shaken by what happened.

Escondido police said a police report was not taken because it was a non-injury collision. Police said insurance companies will have to handle the situation.

10News learned the store will still be open for business despite the building damage.
