SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man died after being shot multiple times in the chest Sunday at the North Clairemont Recreation Center, San Diego Police said.

The shooting happened at 11:50 a.m. on Sunday at 4421 Bannock Ave. The victim was with two other people where families were gathered along with young basketball players, SDPD officials said.

The victim — described by police as a 22-year-old Hispanic male — was found in a grassy area of the park near bleachers, and he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. The injured man was rushed to a hospital for emergency treatment, but SDPD officials confirmed he died from his injuries at 2:51 p.m.

Police searched for two people possibly linked to the shooting in a nearby canyon with help from a police helicopter circling the area and broadcasting to residents near the park.

In a press release, San Diego Police stated: “[SDPD Homicide Unit] Detectives have learned the victim had a brief confrontation with two males that were in the park immediately preceding the shooting. During that brief confrontation, the suspect produced a handgun and shot the victim multiple times before the suspect and his companion ran off south through the park.

There were multiple persons in and around the park that witnessed a portion of the shooting and provided limited descriptions of suspects. Detectives are currently in the process of interviewing those witnesses, gathering physical evidence from the crime scene, and checking the area for any surveillance video footage.”

Homicide Unit detectives have a description of the two male suspects, “but until witnesses can be further interviewed, that information is not being released at this time," according to police.
